Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak Launches Airasias New Direct Route From Langkawi To Shenzhen

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today officiated at the launch of AirAsia new direct route from Langkawi to Shenzhen, China that will enable Langkawi to be further developed as a world-class tourist destination.
The ceremony was held at Lang Merah Complex here and was also attended by Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abd Aziz Kaprawi and group chief excecutive of AirAsia group, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes.
The thrice weekly route, which commenced on August 9, is poised to further boost tourism in Langkawi, in line with the Langkawi Development Authority's (LADA) mission to tap into new foreign markets.
AirAsia has seven destinations from Langkawi, with four domestic routes, namely Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor Baru and Kuching as well as three international routes ? Singapore, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
Meanwhile, Tony in his speech, expressed his appreciation of Najib’s leadership in reducing the airport tax.
“Today we see that through the value of his (Najib) brave leadership, direct international tourists have increased from 87,754 passengers in 2015 to 187,433 passengers last year, an increase of 120 per cent,” he said.
The number, he said, represented a contribution of RM300 milion to the country's gross domestic product based on the 12 times multiplier effect, in which 2016 was the first year with the figures for the international tourists having outnumbered domestic tourists.
“We are driven by this and already this year we have flown over one million tourists to Langkawi through our 238 weekly flights from Langkawi,” he said. ? Bernama

Know Bonsai Europa show 2015

Over one hundred great trees on display, eight demonstrations, free workshops for children and a wonderful location: Tony Tickle on the Bonsai Europa 2015 event. Almost forgot, Tony also shares studio-shots from the winning trees in this post.
Two years ago I was frustrated that the UK was sadly lacking when it came to being part of the European Bonsai scene. There were lots of small ‘local’ or specialized events but nothing on a large scale so I decided that I would organize Bonsai Europa. I put out the invitation to artists across Europe and the UK to present their trees at the event and the result was that there was representation from almost every nation across Europe. The support from traders across the continent was fantastic, 30 traders including Japan, Sweden, Hungary, Germany, Czech and France supported the event. Over 125 trees from 80 exhibitors, two ‘club’ shows, Suiseki displays and free children’s workshops.
And there were several demo’s, right?
There were eleven demonstrators from across Europe working on material that had been personally prepared by me over the last three years. The Demonstrators were: Andrew Campbell: UK, Bartosz Warwas: Poland, Falko Hamann: Germany, Jose Redondo: Spain, Milan KarpÃÅ¡ek: Czech, Nik Rozman: Slovenia, Ofer Grunwald: Israel, Sándor Papp: Hungary, Tracy Gibson: UK, Will Baddeley UK and Yannick Kiggen: Belgium
Will movies of the event be published? And what about a book?
I had a professional TV production company filming the whole weekend and a movie will be available soon, as for a book, it will need to be crowd funded but I have the professional shots in Hi resolution ready to go.
Are you doing it again?
The event will take place every two years and Bonsai Europa 2017 is already in the planning, we have learned from what went well and what could be improved. Every trader wants to return as they had good sales. Exhibitors are now targeting trees for two years time.
That is great news! Having organized this event for the first time, you might do things differently next time; what can we expect
The event will be a two-day as this year, the ‘demo’ format may well change as for a big name… who knows?
The winning plants of Bonsai Europa 2015
Tony shared some studio photos already on his blog and allowed us to share the winning trees below. We asked Tony to share some insights for each winning tree; helping us understand how to value the winners and understand their qualities.
The judging of the trees was overseen by Steve McKee and was completed by all the demo artists and a couple of invited individuals. A total of 12 judges ensured that good cross section of tastes were covered. The winning trees:
Best in Show: Mark and Ritta Cooper, Shohin display
Mark and Ritta were very surprised at receiving this award, they are no strangers to receiving recognition for their wonderful trees, the surprise being that never has a Shohin display ever won ‘Best in Show’ at a major event in Europe. Could this be that the majority of judges were …lets just say… younger than those who normally Judge at shows, and they recognize that ‘small is beautiful’.
Best deciduous Bonsai Best deciduous display: David Barlow Beech Raft
I collected this tree many years ago with David and have witnessed his care and skill bringing the tree to perfection for the show. It’s quite exquisite and has tiny leaves. The pot is by Gordon Duffet and was given to David from Tery Foster as a Gift because it was simply perfect.
Best Evergreen: Mark and Ritta Cooper: Chuhin Pine
This is a close to perfection in a pine that I have seen, everything in perfect scale and presented beautifully. Without doubt one of the best White pines in Europe.
Best Shohin display: John Armitage
This three point display is so understated, the juniper is beautifully worked and in perfect proportion. The supporting tree and tiny accent complete the overall image, I loved this from John.
EBA award: Barbara and Herbert Obermayer, European Olive
I first saw this tree in Switzerland three years ago and knew that over the next few years it would mature into a great tree, the display of deadwood is amazing and the future of this Olive is bright indeed.
Steve ‘Harleyrider’ Award: Terry Foster, Hawthorn
I was with Terry when this tree was collected from the wild, it was over one meter tall. I love the movement in the truck, the aged bark and gentle arc of the foliage. The Stone ‘pot’ is natural and collected in Scotland many years ago.
Sonderpries: Will Baddeley, English Elm
Recognized for the natural appearance yet totally worked by Will the tree is mature and superbly presented. The tree has a majestic presence and is a worthy winner of this prestigious prize.

Uber Owns 50% Of India Taxi Market Says Amit Jain

Cab-hailing firm Uber has as big a share in the Indian market as its main domestic rival Ola, a top executive at the US-based company has said, as the two companies engage in an intensifying battle for dominance in the rapidly growing sector.
“We are as big as Ola with a 50% market share (in terms of trips completed by the two companies). However, we are driven by more ambitious goals… Uber wants to be the transportation provider of choice and replace car ownership,” Uber India CEO Amit Jain told.
The comments come after Japanese telecom and internet conglomerate SoftBank claimed, in a regulatory filing in August last year, that its portfolio company Ola enjoyed a commanding 85% share in India’s cab-hailing market.
Tokyo-headquartered SoftBank is the largest investor in Ola. Its claim implied that all other taxi-hailing apps including Uber, Meru and Easycabs, among others, battle it out to capture a slice of the remaining, relatively minor share of the market.
Jain’s claim resonates a similar claim by Eric Alexander, president of business in Asia for Uber, who in mid-March said Uber would overtake Ola in 30 days.
Jain also said that Uber, which raised $3.5 billion investment from Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund last week, will continue to invest in its India operations. The investments will go mainly toward increasing the number of drivers on its platform, adding product features and strengthening its technology team in India. The company will focus on growth for the foreseeable future rather than looking for profitability, he said.
India is the third-largest market (in terms of the total number of trips) for Uber, after US and China. It is present in 27 cities across the country and will launch operations in another five cities this year. Uber had set aside an investment of $1 billion for the Indian market in July last year.
Uber will primarily focus on strengthening its low-cost, affordable offerings – UberGo and UberX – as it sees most demand coming from these two categories in India. Jain said the company has shut down its high-end Uber Black and Uber XL services in many cities.
Uber operates in over 400 cities across 70 countries. The top 30 cities generate $1 billion in profit annually, the company has said previously.

7 Ways To Make A Lasting Impression At Your First Day Of Job

Getting jittery, nervous, butterflies in the stomach- the big day for which you’ve waited for years is now nearing and is right ahead of you, and you really don’t want to mess it up. There is and will always be a first time and your first day at your first job is just round the corner. While, it is completely understandable to be a little nervous, it will not be that difficult if you take care of a few things.
Be Prepared!!
Come prepared for your big day, which primarily means have small self-introduction ready or what is generally called as ‘elevator pitch’. Prepare a short intro’ of the self which could cover your college and course details and a line or two about your unique hobbies or interests. Do not talk about hobbies such as eating, watching TV, etc…they are lifelines….not hobbies!! Talk of your interest in Robotics, Mobile Gaming, Software Designing, etc. It’s also advisable to read-up on the company you are joining and share a line or two about its growth, service line or history, if any.
Professional Dressing!
First impression is indeed the last impression and make sure you make that lasting impression with formal clothing. It’s generally advisable to check on the company website or with HR on the corporate attire and wear accordingly; however, even if the corporate culture is of semi-formal do not show up in low waist jeans or cargoes. It’s good to be wearing formals with trouser, shirt and matching shoes.
No Slangs!
Call the people around you ‘dude’…’buddy’….and that impression is gone! Corporate culture now a days might not necessarily be of ‘sirs and mams’ but it definitely is of the first or the last name. Observe what HR or people around you are calling each other and follow the same. Get rid of all the slangs at least as long as you are in the office. Remember, your language has to match your attire!
Avoid Personal Calls!
You will not have a lot of work on your first day and will find yourself sitting idle and waiting for things to happen; utilise this time to observe things around you instead of calling and chatting with your friends or family. Even if you are not observing, HR and other teams are, so make sure that you productively use this time. In case, you’ve been given a system visit the company website and read up on company policies, their services, history and so on.
Ask Questions and Listen!!
It’s your first job and everyone knows about it and they expect you to question or ask things which you are not sure of or which requires clarity. Talking too much or not talking at all might put off HR or your Boss, hence it is advisable to keep a balance between questioning and listening. So, when the HR is conducting an orientation sessions it’s good to listen about the what the company’s culture, how they grew, line of business and when a question / answer round is thrown open to the audience, do not hesitate to ask questions about partners, their future plans, expansion plans, etc. but remember to sound like a professional with relevant and sensible questions.
Don’t judge….be an observer instead!
First job….first colleagues…first Manager…….don’t make snap judgments about people or situations. It’s best to observe people around you, the work culture and not talk about them or make judgements; stay away of any office politics or controversial discussions, gossips.
